Every pattern leaves a curve

The microscope watches one interaction. This instrument watches decades: a term’s full lifecycle traced across four public corpora, with its ignition, peak, and decay detected by stated heuristics and its dated history pinned beside them. Words have birthdays. Ideas have epidemic curves. Here they are, measured.

Eight documented lifecycles

Each case pairs the measured curves with the dated record: the coinage, the carrier book, the inflection moment, the platform wave, the denaturing. The pattern repeats because the process is one process.

1960 to 2026

meme

Coined by a biologist in 1976 as 'a unit of cultural transmission'. Thirty years inside academia, then the internet flattened it into a funny image and the flattened version conquered the language.

1950 to 2026

gaslighting

A 1944 film title that spent fifty years as a niche clinical metaphor, then went from therapy rooms to Word of the Year inside a decade once politics and social media picked it up.

1920 to 2026

ecosystem

Coined in a 1935 botany paper, carried by one textbook for a generation, then adopted whole by the environmental movement. Now every startup pitch deck rents it.

1900 to 2026

narcissist

Sixty-five years inside psychoanalysis, one 1979 bestseller, one DSM entry, and then TikTok turned a clinical diagnosis into a name for anyone who hurt you. The highest-immune term in the set: the named pattern denies itself.

1900 to 2026

mindfulness

A Victorian translation of a Pali word, operationalized in one 1979 stress clinic, carried by a book, a PBS series, and a Google course to a TIME cover. Then denatured into an app-store category.

1965 to 2026

microaggression

Coined in 1970, dormant for thirty-six years, given a taxonomy in one 2007 paper, then a single campus campaign in March 2014 carried it into the general vocabulary in under a week.

1995 to 2026

neurodiversity

Named in 1998 on the model of 'biodiversity', incubated for a decade in self-advocacy communities, then carried by one prize-winning book, corporate hiring programs, and TikTok into everyday speech.

1985 to 2026

trauma-informed

A 1990s clinical phrase that stayed inside psychiatry and social work until one federal framework and one bestseller landed in the same year, 2014. Six years later it was the grammar of half the internet.
