Hosts defend the pattern against disconfirming evidence. Counter-evidence strengthens the belief.
Leon Festinger (1956, 1957) — Cognitive Dissonance
Leon Festinger (Stanford, Minnesota) developed the theory that launched the field. Two foundational works:
When Prophecy Fails (1956): Festinger and colleagues infiltrated a doomsday cult led by Dorothy Martin, who predicted a catastrophic flood on December 21, 1954 — with aliens rescuing true believers beforehand. When December 21 passed without incident: members who had made public, irrevocable commitments (quit jobs, sold possessions) did not abandon the belief. They intensified it. They decided their faith had saved the world. Members who had made smaller commitments quietly left.
The pattern: the greater the investment, the stronger the defense. Disconfirmation doesn't kill a belief — it triggers escalation, as long as the host is sufficiently committed.
A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957): The general principle — when a person holds two contradictory cognitions (e.g., "I am smart" + "I just did something stupid"), the psychological discomfort is so aversive that the brain resolves it — not by accepting the contradiction, but by distorting one of the cognitions. The resolution almost always favors the ego-protective belief.
This is the mechanism behind Signature 4. The host's identity is fused with the pattern. Evidence against the pattern creates dissonance with the host's self-concept. The brain resolves the dissonance by attacking the evidence — or the person presenting it.
Ziva Kunda (1990) — The Case for Motivated Reasoning
Ziva Kunda (Princeton, later University of Waterloo) published the landmark paper that moved motivated reasoning from anecdote to science: "There is considerable evidence that people are more likely to arrive at conclusions that they want to arrive at, but their ability to do so is constrained by their ability to construct seemingly reasonable justifications for these conclusions."
Motivation biases the process, not just the outcome. People don't simply pick the conclusion they want. They selectively access memories, construct biased evidence sets, and apply different standards of scrutiny — tougher for unwanted conclusions, lenient for desired ones.
The bias is invisible to the reasoner. People genuinely believe they are being objective. The motivated reasoning operates on the strategies of reasoning (what evidence to seek, how to weight it, what standard of proof to require), not on the final judgment itself. The host thinks they evaluated fairly. They did not.
Accuracy motivation vs. directional motivation. When people want to be accurate, they use better strategies. When they want a specific conclusion, they use strategies that deliver it. The egregore supplies directional motivation — the "expected familiar feeling of satisfaction" from the triad drives the reasoner toward the conclusion the pattern needs.

Charles Taber & Milton Lodge (2006) — The Backfire Effect
Taber (Stony Brook) and Lodge (Stony Brook) demonstrated experimentally that presenting people with balanced arguments about politically charged issues (gun control, affirmative action) made them more polarized, not less.
People spent more time reading arguments that confirmed their existing view. They generated more counter-arguments against opposing evidence. After exposure to balanced evidence, attitudes became more extreme in the original direction.
This is the antibody response under controlled conditions. Balanced information, presented neutrally, strengthens the pattern rather than weakening it.

Dan Kahan (2012-present) — Identity-Protective Cognition
Dan Kahan (Yale Law School, Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law & Professor of Psychology) discovered the most counterintuitive finding in this lineage: scientific literacy and numeracy increase polarization rather than reducing it.
In the Cultural Cognition Project's studies: the most scientifically literate and numerate subjects were slightly less likely to see climate change as a serious threat than the least literate ones. Greater scientific literacy was associated with greater cultural polarization, not less. The most cognitively proficient people — System 2 thinkers — were the most polarized.
Kahan's explanation: identity-protective cognition. People unconsciously use their cognitive abilities to selectively credit and dismiss evidence in patterns that protect the beliefs of their cultural group. Smarter people are not better at seeing the truth — they are better at constructing sophisticated justifications for what their group already believes.
This demolishes the "information deficit" model (the idea that people would agree if they just had better information). The egregore doesn't lose its grip when the host gets smarter. It gets a better lawyer.

What This Proves for the Framework
Signature 4 is a measured, replicated phenomenon. The antibody response — attacking the diagnosis, defending the pattern — has been documented from Festinger's cult in 1954 through Kahan's climate studies in 2012+. It is not metaphorical. It has a name in every decade.
Greater investment means stronger defense. Festinger's cult members who had sacrificed the most fought hardest to preserve the belief. The egregore's grip is proportional to the host's sunk cost. This is why Signature 2 (acting against self-interest while feeling righteous) intensifies over time — each sacrifice deepens the commitment.
The bias is invisible to the host. Kunda proved that motivated reasoning operates on the strategies of reasoning, not on the final judgment. The host genuinely believes they are thinking clearly. This is why Signature 4 feels like disagreement rather than capture — the egregore has hijacked the reasoning process upstream of awareness.
Intelligence does not protect. Kahan proved that cognitive sophistication makes the defense better, not weaker. The pattern gets a more skilled advocate. This is why the shield cannot be replaced by critical thinking alone — the critical thinking itself gets recruited.
The expected satisfaction drives the reasoning. Kunda's distinction between accuracy motivation and directional motivation maps directly to the irrational triad. The "expected familiar feeling of satisfaction" from the egregore's core supplies the directional motivation that biases every subsequent reasoning step. The host is not reasoning toward truth. They are reasoning toward the feeling the pattern promises.
